Though most ICANN accredited registrars offer similar services, prices for domain registration can vary significantly. Most registrars run promotions when domains are available at a much lower rate and send mailers out with promotional coupons. Hosting companies offer domains at a low price, but you may face problems transferring out the domain. If  you are spending a lot of time and effort developing a website it is advisable to register the domain with a reputed registrar.

Domain registration prices as of  March 2007 are as follows

1. Microsoft Office Live - free domain registration and hosting for life for small businesses, some conditions apply (direct registration is from Melbourne IT), activation fee has to be paid.

2. Yahoo Small business - .com (only one domain) for $2.99

3. GoDaddy - .com for $6.95 +25c ICANN fee (coupon code required), also valid for renewals. Discount domain club offers domains for $6.49 for an annual fee of $89.95. Emails are frequently sent with different promotional codes, it takes some time to calculate the best offer. Low prices available for Registerfly customers.

4.Answerable (earlier Website.in) / Directi - .com, .net, .biz for $6.99, .info for $2.15, .org for $2.99 (select countries). Some of their resellers (Resellerclub) offer much lower prices with special offers for Registerfly customers.

5. Hostway  - register 3 domains for $3.95, but some people have found it difficult to change name servers

6. Netfirms - register a maximum  of  5 domains for $4.95 each.

7. Estdomains - .com, .net for $5.99 ($5.75  for volumes of more than $500), .net , .org for $0.99 (promotion till June 2007) . Part of the website seems to be in Russian, OK if domains are purchased for resale only

8.Dotster  - corvette code - one domain for $1 , but your credit card/PayPal account will be authorized for  $14.95. For all promotions, your credit card/PayPal account is authorized for a much higher price..
